The inspiration for this Blog da Redação article came from accessing the main page of two of the largest internet portals in Brazil. One highlighted “With new support, Dilma rules out legalizing abortion” ; the other had “Serra says he is in favor of homosexual civil unions” . Have you noticed that only these two subjects are discussed in this second round?

The impression given is that Brazilians do not care about public Special Data safety, education, employment, transportation, etc. He just wants to know whether the candidate is against or in favor of legalizing abortion or same-sex marriage, as if a definitive decision on these issues would solve Brazil's problems. This is simply ridiculous.

In a period of less than a month, the city of Rio de Janeiro recorded 18 trawls. Eighteen! While the circus was burning at the future Olympic venue, Dilma was trying to find a way to deny the rumor that she is in favor of abortion, and Serra was trying to convey the image that he is a religious man. They could take advantage of this moment to present serious proposals for the problem of public security.

New "santinho" distributed by José Serra

Today, October 15th, is Teacher's Day, a professional who has very little to celebrate in Brazil. The salary floor and the teacher's career plan have already been, respectively, approved and sanctioned, but so far they are not guaranteed. None of the presidential candidates met with the class to discuss the matter. They preferred to meet with churches.

But this isn’t just the candidates’ fault. Before it was! If they only talk about abortion and homosexual marriage, it's because there are people, and a lot of people, who give greater importance to these issues than to what will really make this country change. This exaggerated moralism at the wrong time helps explain why some “politicians” are elected. Or have you never heard someone say they're going to vote for so-and-so just because he's a “brother”?

I agree that abortion is a very controversial topic, but it is being debated at the wrong time. Furthermore, a person's morals and ethics cannot be judged solely by their stance on abortion. Regarding the issue of civil unions between homosexuals, it is not a law that will prevent two people who like each other from being together.

And for you, is the candidate's position on these issues so important that it determines your vote? What is really important to solve in Brazil? Give your opinion!
